The dry lacquer technique is a traditional lacquerware method in which a mold of the desired shape is made from clay, wood, or other materials, then lacquer is applied and layered with linen multiple times before either removing the mold or leaving it in place to create a lightweight, sturdy object or sculpture.

GALLERY SHILI’s Table Mat series reinterprets this traditional lacquer technique with a modern sensibility. Inspired by nature, its natural design and the layered depth of lacquer applied over linen are both practical and appealing.

The variety of colors and textures depends on the combination of linen fiber types and lacquer application methods, as well as the weather at the time of production. The diversity of all these natural materials and nature itself transform each piece into a one-of-a-kind object.

This work was completed through a close collaboration with artist Park Ko Woon. Drawing on an Eastern sensibility, the artist’s calm rhythm reinterprets the unique vitality of lacquer, which only awakens after tens of thousands of strokes, through a contemporary perspective.
